Sports: JHLC - Netball
The Jaffna Hindu Ladies netball team was formed as a result of the Tamil Schools Sports Association tournament ("TSSA" – previously JSSA) introducing netball to its annual cricket tournament in 1993. Encouraged by the opportunity of participating in a competitive arena, and representing Jaffna Hindu Ladies’, JHLC OGA UK was formed and it put forward a team. In its debut year, the team reached the finals of the tournament and were awarded the runners up prize. In 1995, the team returned with a more experienced and determined squad and battled through to the final against Chundikuli Girls School. The nail-biting game remained tied after full time and the teams entered a period known as ‘sudden death’. This is where the team to score the first goal would be crowned champions. Jaffna Hindu Ladies were the well-deserved winners and took this title in 1995 for the first time. The team went on to enjoy a strong run by achieving the position of runners up for four consecutive years after. Since then the team reached the finals or semi-final stage every year until 2012, winning the tournament in 2012 and 2013. JHLC also introduced younger teams – more specifically in the under 10 and under 12 categories, both being crowned as champions in 2008 and 2010, respectively.
There is so much young sporting talent across JHLC OGA UK and we are lucky to have a wealth of great coaches and volunteers as well. We hope their tremendous achievements at the TSSA tournament together with our own netball tournament and Games will inspire others to come and give a new sport a go too.
